Handcrafted Wooden Testimony Stools

"...for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." - Rev 19:10

Hi I'm Doug Giles,

My story with Testimony Stools began over 50 years ago as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Peru.

My first companion, Ray McCrite, would tell people that a testimony is like a three-legged stool. You need to pray, study, and go to church to obtain a testimony.

If you do all three, the stool will stand. If you only do two out of the three, the stool will fall. Pretty simple. I found it to be true not only for investigators but for my own life as well.

We have 18 grandchildren. I was worried about my grandchildren. I wanted them to continue to develop their testimonies. I paid a friend to make 20 stools that I gave out to them for Christmas. I then started making them myself.

I would give them away to friends, church members, family, and neighbors. I have given them to a couple of ministers. I have given them to newlyweds at wedding receptions.

I even gave one to a Home Depot employee who was curious about my purchases and the products I was buying. The cleaning lady of a friend saw the stool and immediately understood it. She didn’t need to have the concept explained to her. She wanted one, and I got one for her. She is a devout Catholic.

I decided that these stools are non denominational. Every congregation has people with testimonies, otherwise they wouldn’t be there. My accountant has one in his office. I have given them to friends of friends. One of my old Boy Scouts is a physician. He has a stool in his office. I have Bishops and Stake Presidents in our Church using their stools in counseling with people. Even grandmothers have bought some for all their grandkids.

400 Stools Made So Far

My younger grandchildren often sit on these stools, and sometimes they fall over. In contemplating this I realized that was not the message I want to give. I want them to know that if you spend all your time living on the edges their testimony will fall. It has to have a strong foundation in the center. To have that strong foundation in your lives, you need to answer these foundational questions. The two nondenominational questions are:

  • Is there a God in Heaven who hears and answers prayers?

  • Is Jesus Christ the Son of God, who was crucified for the sins of the world?

The wording on each stool is applied with vinyl. I have found that the wood surface has to be really clean for the vinyl to adhere.

In the process of getting answers to these fundamental questions, if it seems that your prayers are not leaving the room and getting answered, maybe you need to clean the surface. God will not answer your prayers if you don’t repent.

Be Clean!

You also need to constantly nourish the tree. It will not survive without constant nourishment. Pray, study, and worship at church. Share your testimony in both word and deed. Christ cursed the fig tree because there was no fruit.

I have a granddaughter who recently ask me: “Grandpa, have you said your prayers today?” I was so grateful that she cares enough about me to make sure that I am doing the things in my life to continue building my strong foundation. I am constantly talking to my family about the principles of the three-legged stool. I hope it is a daily reminder to them of what is important in life. It is my desire that they will always know that their grandfather has a testimony and wants their testimonies to continue to grow and be nourished as well.

What a wonderful blessing a testimony is. What a powerful experience it is to have the Holy Ghost testify of our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. “...for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Revelations 19:10

I am so thankful for my Testimony! It is my MOST VALUED possession!

"We are so elated to have it...This stool is special because we will use it the rest of our lived in teaching experiences."
